Your Client's Money Story, Read Through Five Energies
Money is rarely just money. When a client says they can't raise their rates, or they overspend when they're stressed, or they feel guilty charging for their work, they're usually describing a deeper pattern. That pattern is their money story: the set of beliefs they carry about what they deserve, what is safe, and what is possible.
In the MOJOWAY framework, we look at these patterns through five elemental energies: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each energy has a natural way of moving through the world, and each carries a distinct relationship to earning, spending, and self-worth. This article is not about diagnosing anyone. It's a reflection tool you can use with clients to help them see their money story with more clarity and compassion.
Why money stories live in the body, not the spreadsheet
Most financial advice assumes that if people just understood the numbers, they would change their behavior. But coaches know that behavior change rarely follows information alone. A client can know exactly what to do and still freeze when it's time to send an invoice or ask for a deposit.
That's because money stories are emotional and somatic. They show up as tightness in the chest, a knot in the stomach, or a sudden urge to change the subject. The five elements give us a language for these felt experiences without turning them into a diagnosis.
For example, a client who feels a rush of heat and urgency when they think about money is showing Fire energy. A client who feels heavy and slow, like they can't get started, is showing Earth or Water. Noticing the energy is the first step toward choice.
Wood energy: the money story of 'I have to push harder'
Wood energy is about growth, vision, and forward movement. When it's balanced, a Wood client sets clear financial goals and takes steady action. When it's under pressure, the story becomes 'I must keep pushing or everything will fall apart.'
In practice, this can look like a coach who constantly launches new offers, never pauses to celebrate, and feels guilty when they rest. Their money story says that earning is directly tied to effort, and any slowdown means failure.
A useful reflection question for Wood clients is: What would growth look like if it didn't require force? Sometimes the next step is not another launch, but a boundary. For example, one client realized she was saying yes to every discovery call because she feared missing out. When she raised her rates and limited her calls, her income stayed the same but her exhaustion dropped.
Fire energy: the money story of 'my worth is my visibility'
Fire energy is about connection, joy, and being seen. Fire clients often have a natural gift for attracting people. Their money story can become 'I am only valuable when I am visible and in demand.'
This can lead to overcommitting, underpricing to keep everyone happy, or feeling depleted after a big launch. The underlying belief is that love and money both come from outside approval.
A Fire client might say, 'I can't raise my prices because my clients need me.' The work here is to separate service from self-sacrifice. One coach I worked with started charging for a community she had been running for free. She was terrified people would leave. Most stayed, and she finally had energy for her one-to-one work.
- Notice where you say yes to avoid disappointing others.
- Practice receiving money without immediately giving it back in extra time.
- Ask: What would I charge if I trusted my own value?
Earth energy: the money story of 'there is never enough'
Earth energy is about stability, care, and nourishment. Earth clients are often the ones who hold everything together. Their money story can be 'I must be responsible and never take risks, because there is never enough.'
This shows up as chronic undercharging, over-delivering, and a reluctance to invest in themselves. They may keep a tight grip on every expense while ignoring the bigger picture of their own sustainability.
For Earth clients, the reflection is about worthiness, not just budgeting. One client realized she was charging the same rate she charged five years ago, even though her skills had grown. She was afraid that asking for more would make her greedy. We explored where that belief came from, and she eventually raised her rates by 30 percent. She lost one client and gained two.
Metal energy: the money story of 'I must be perfect to be paid'
Metal energy is about quality, standards, and integrity. Metal clients often have high expectations of themselves and others. Their money story can be 'I can only charge when everything is flawless.'
This leads to endless tweaking, delayed launches, and a fear of being seen as less than professional. They may avoid sales conversations because they don't want to seem pushy or imperfect.
A Metal client might say, 'I need to finish this certification before I can raise my prices.' The work is to separate excellence from perfection. One coach I know kept postponing her group program because she wanted the workbook to be perfect. She finally launched with a simple PDF and filled the program in two weeks.
- Define what 'good enough' looks like before you start.
- Set a deadline for decisions to avoid endless refinement.
- Remember that clients buy transformation, not perfection.
Water energy: the money story of 'I'll figure it out later'
Water energy is about flow, intuition, and adaptability. Water clients are often creative and resourceful. Their money story can be 'money will come when it comes, and I'll just go with the flow.'
While this can feel freeing, it can also lead to avoidance. Bills pile up, taxes are ignored, and financial planning feels constricting. The underlying belief is that structure will kill their creativity.
For Water clients, the invitation is to bring gentle structure without losing spontaneity. One client started a simple weekly money date with herself: 20 minutes to check her accounts and set one intention. She found that the structure actually gave her more freedom because she wasn't carrying low-grade anxiety all the time.
Working with the five energies in your coaching practice
You don't need to be a financial advisor to help clients with their money story. Your role is to help them see the pattern, feel it in their body, and choose a different response. The five elements give you a shared language that is non-clinical and non-judgmental.
Start by asking your client which energy feels most familiar when they think about money. Then explore the belief underneath it. You can also look at which energy is missing. A Wood client who only pushes may need Earth's nourishment. A Water client who avoids may need Metal's structure.
Remember that no element is better or worse. Each is a valid way of being. The goal is not to fix your client, but to help them move more freely between the energies. When they can do that, their money story becomes less of a trap and more of a choice.
