What the daughter printed

Field note, coach in Melbourne

The client is sixty-one. Her daughter brought her in for the first session, and stayed in the room, and asked most of the questions.

The coach's old problem would have been familiar to anyone working with family members: two people in the room with different goals, one paying and one worrying.

What happened instead was that the coach sent the report to both of them, and the daughter printed it.

That shouldn't be a remarkable outcome and it is, because it changes the shape of the relationship. Instead of being the person monitoring her mother, the daughter became the person who has a document and can read it. Something to do rather than someone to police.

The coach's note on that page was four sentences long. It didn't ask for anything and it didn't promise anything. It said what had changed and what the next three months were for.

The fridge is doing more work than any follow-up call.

MOJOWAY's reports are written to be forwarded and printed on purpose: plain English, a coach's note, and no claim big enough to make the daughter nervous.
