Writing with a reed

Writing with a reed

*History of Song*, "Biography of Ouyang Xiu" (宋史·欧阳修传), 14th century CE

Ouyang Xiu's father died when he was four. His mother was poor and the family had no money for brushes, ink, or paper.

So she took reeds from the ground and drew characters in the sand, teaching him to write that way.

He learned. Later he became one of the central figures of Song letters, a scholar, an official, and the writer whose prose style shaped a century.

The detail that makes the story work isn't the poverty. It's that his mother didn't let the lack of tools become a lack of intention. The medium was dirt and reed. The subject was the same.

I've watched people wait years to start because their circumstances weren't right. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough quiet, not enough support. Some of those constraints are real and you should name them honestly. Most are about the medium.

The question I find useful: what is the reed version of this? If I had no tools, no money, no permission and twenty minutes, what is the smallest true form of this thing? Then do that, in dirt, in public, and let it be embarrassing.

The embarrassment is the price of finding out whether you like it.

MOJOWAY's intake takes twenty minutes and no preparation. There's a version of this that costs nothing.
