White hair, new friend

White hair, new friend

Sima Qian, *Records of the Grand Historian*, "Biographies of Lu Zhonglian and Zou Yang", 1st century BCE

Zou Yang was in prison, accused, and wrote a long letter to the king of Liang to save himself. Inside it is a line that's been in Chinese for two thousand years: some men know each other all their lives and are as distant as strangers on first meeting; others meet for the length of a carriage ride and are old friends.

He was writing about politics and about being believed. But the line outlived the letter because everyone recognises it.

I have a friend I've known for fourteen years and we've never once said the true thing. I have another I met at a conference four years ago, and on the second day he told me what he was actually afraid of, in a hotel lobby, and we've been close since.

The difference isn't effort. It's whether the conversation ever went past the level where both people are managing.

What makes people close is not accumulated hours. It's a moment where someone put down the version of themselves they present, and the other person didn't move.

If a relationship of yours has years and no weight, there's probably a conversation you've been avoiding since 2019. You can have it. It won't be ruined by being true.

And if a new person told you something real last month, don't let the calendar decide how much they count.

MOJOWAY is built to skip the managing: twenty minutes of what is actually true, in the second meeting if that is what it takes.
