The doctor who turned and walked away

Han Feizi, "The Illustrations of Laozi" (喻老), 3rd century BCE

Your body mentioned it to you six months ago. You said it was nothing.

The shoulder, on and off since spring. The stomach, after every second coffee. The three a.m. wake-ups, which you treated as a scheduling problem and solved with a phone.

Then a line appears in a lab report and you read it four times.

Bian Que went to see Duke Huan of Cai and stood in front of him for a while. He said: there's illness in the texture of your skin. Left alone it'll go deeper. The duke said he was fine.

Ten days later Bian Que came back and said the illness was in the flesh now. The duke didn't reply. Ten days passed, and it was in the intestines. Still nothing.

Ten more days. Bian Que saw the duke from a distance and turned around and left. The duke sent someone to ask why. Bian Que explained. Illness in the skin, you heat and massage it. In the flesh, needles. In the intestines, decoctions. Once it reaches the marrow, it belongs to the office in charge of fate, and there is nothing for a doctor to do.

Five days later the duke was in pain everywhere. He sent for Bian Que. Bian Que had already gone to Qin.

Everyone remembers the lesson about not hiding from doctors. What gets lost is the arithmetic along the bottom of the story. Every stage the illness moved, one more tool went out of reach.

Whatever has been sitting in your body long enough that you've stopped noticing it, book the appointment.

MOJOWAY starts with the body because that's usually where awakening shows up first, as a symptom, weeks before you're willing to have the thought.
