A man in Song found a piece of jade and offered it to Zihan, a minister of the state.
Zihan refused. The man insisted, saying it was a genuine treasure.
Zihan said: you call it precious. I consider that refusing to be bought is precious.
If you give it to me and I take it, we would both lose the thing we value.
The man said: I'm not carrying this around the countryside, it's dangerous. Giving it to you protects me.
Zihan had a jade cutter work it, then sold it and gave the man the money.
The interesting move is at the end. He didn't just refuse and let the man walk out with a dangerous stone. He found the version of the transaction where both people kept what mattered.
That's the difference between having principles and having principles that work. Refusing and walking away is easy and often leaves a mess. Refusing while solving the other person's practical problem is the actual skill.
Where are you being offered something whose price is your judgement? In most working lives it isn't a piece of jade. It's a flattering account, an invitation into a room, a promotion to something that would make you worse.
You don't have to leave them holding the stone. You can name the trade and find the version where nobody has to be bought.
MOJOWAY's client file asks what a person won't trade. Writing it down makes that answer available when it's expensive.
