MOJOWAY · The Mirror
You don't need to become better. You need to be seen.

You don't need to become better. You need to be seen.

Wang Yangming, *Chuanxilu* (传习录), 16th century

You didn't do anything wrong today. And you still walked with your back near the wall.

Somewhere along the way you got very good at being easy to have around. You read the room before you speak. You soften the ask. You say no worries when it isn't.

A woman I know never speaks first in meetings. Afterwards she writes everything she wanted to say on one page, then tears it up. She's been doing that for four years.

In the 1500s Wang Yangming was walking in the hills with his students. One of them pointed at a flowering tree growing out of a rock and asked what business a flower in the middle of nowhere had with the human heart. Wang said: before you looked at it, it sat there in silence along with your mind. The moment you looked, its colors came clear all at once.

People treat that as mysticism. I hear something much more ordinary. A person's sense of existing often waits for someone else to look first.

That is the trap. If your worth needs attention to switch on, then the quiet days are spent sitting in the dark, holding the switch.

The tree doesn't need visitors. Whatever small thing you did today, unwitnessed, still happened.

MOJOWAY is where I take the second look, the one nobody applauds for. A mirror doesn't cheer. It shows you plainly, and what you do with that is the growth.
